Green Light to Transform Alpha Grove Community Centre on the Isle of Dogs

A watercolor-style architectural rendering depicts a two-story brick building with gabled roofs and several large windows on a street with people walking and cycling, and cars parked.

Planning permission has been granted for the refurbishment and extension of Alpha Grove Community Centre on the Isle of Dogs, Tower Hamlets, bringing significant improvements to a valued local community facility.

Designed by London-based architectural practice SITUACTIONS STUDIO, the proposals will improve and reorganise more than 600 square metres of existing community space, alongside a new extension providing a welcoming main entrance and lobby.

More Spaces for Hire

A key benefit of the scheme is the creation of more community spaces available for hire, in a greater variety of sizes. From smaller group meetings and workshops to larger gatherings and community events, the improved facilities will offer greater flexibility for local organisations, groups and residents.

With suitable halls and flexible spaces for community use often difficult to find on the Isle of Dogs, the project aims to address this need by making better use of an existing local facility, providing more opportunities for people to meet, organise activities and bring the community together.

The improvements will also make the centre more accessible, safer and more welcoming, while supporting its long-term financial sustainability through increased opportunities for space hire.

Planning and Timetable

The proposals received a positive response from Tower Hamlets Council's planning officers. The project is being developed for a charitable organisation without public funding, with completion anticipated by the end of 2027.
